Let’s talk about colour baby!

This year’s favourite colour chosen by Pantone is Viva Magenta. It looks the way it sounds bright, bold and fun! This colour is from the red family and represents brave, fearlessness, optimism and joy. Did you also know that it is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as the strongest and brightest in the world has known? No? neither did I, but know you do and a big thank you to ideal homes for filling us in.

Below I’m going to list a few colours and the representations behind them, from this you can grasp a better understanding of why you are drawn to this colour, whilst also seeing why you aren’t so fond of a colour too.

White represents purity cleanliness and simplicity. Did you know In China white is the colour of death and mourning? In interior design, white can show cleanliness and can give a feeling of refreshment. Although I do feel like too much bright fresh white can give a bit more of a hospital feel. When choosing a white finish, I usually choose a white with a hint of another colour, such as grey.

Now if you google “what black represents” then you’ll get death, heaviness and depression etc..” but black is such a powerful colour it can also represent glamour, mystery, experience, and wisdom. Never shy away from using black because it adds depth and real excitement when decorating!

This used to be a popular colour last year and I still see hints of it used today. When it comes to using grey in interior design, for me, using grey on grey is a big NO-NO! It symbolises a lack of confidence and fear of exposure. I will say though a positive is that it is a great colour for hibernation, on the other side of things it can attract depression. Now I’m not saying grey is a bad colour because it’s not, it’s a great base colour to use for example I have just chosen the colour turtledove grey for a client’s hallway, so don’t be scared to consider it!

Green is another favourite of mine. It’s the colour of nature and don’t you think it creates that fresh outside feel when you use it indoors! In Ireland it also symbolizes luck, wouldn’t that be something great to have to keep you holding on?

Blue is known for sadness and can feel like a cool, cold colour. But did you know it also represents intelligence, serenity and loyalty? When decorating a room, the colour blue is known as a calming colour.

Red can be seen as a warming colour and is filled with energy and excitement. There are so many positives from red, it’s also known for passion and lust. It also symbolises strength, courage, and rebellion. Used in the right way the colour red can really help to create a warm and welcoming room.

Brown is another colour that I can’t say no to. When I think of brown, I think of log fires and cosy living rooms. I think brown is such a great colour to work with them neutral tones are so approachable and can be paired with absolutely anything.

“Sun is shining the weather is sweet” This song is literally the representation of how I feel about yellow. Doesn’t it just brighten up your day? The colour yellow is known to make us feel more confident and optimistic, but please remember that too much yellow can have the opposite effect and can make you feel nervous sometimes even suicidal. BUT if you use it correctly with them pops of sunshine, it can create a lovely room/area.

I hope this can help a little bit more when deciding on picking a colour for an area you’re working on. Isn’t it crazy how much more there is behind choosing a colour?
