Renovation checklist ✔️

When working on a renovation I stick to this checklist to help me complete the renovation on time and without any costly mistakes.

Budget and Finances

Begin by working out your budget and finances. Gather as much information on the area you’re looking to renovate, and ask local trades if they could help with an estimate, state all the information you have. A lot of trades will offer a free quote but make sure to shop around!

As an interior designer, I research materials before purchasing for a client. Remember to buy materials that are highly durable and cost-efficient, this doesn’t mean the cheaper option. Shop locally being based in Hertfordshire we will purchase from trades locally and small businesses!

Finally time! Time is money after all! How long will the renovation take? How long do you have for the renovation? Have you added in time for surprises? ( This is also included with money). When will this section be finished so the next section can start?

Planning permission

Does the project you are working on need planning permission? You will need planning permission to build something new on a plot of Land, to build an extension ( you have the right to extend 3m without needing planning permission on a terrace or semi-detached and 4m on detached houses) and finally when changing the use of your building. Most of the time you will need building regs approved for structural changes and electrical installations.

You can apply for planning permission online through your local council. Here is the one for St Albans Planning Permission. If you have an Architect they can help with this process.

Space Planning

Now we can move on to designing the inside! Beginning with Space planning. If you have subscribed to our monthly newsletter you will receive a freebie containing information on space planning.

Professionals

By now you will have an idea of what professionals you will need. Make sure to always shop around when choosing your professionals.

JCavaree Interiors can handle this stage if you have chosen the Project Management service, we work alongside a group of trusted tradesmen that we can contact if needed.

Construction

With your time scale to hand you can begin the interior work. This is when the fun begins, from lighting designs to paint samples and choosing the right furniture for you. You can now create your new sanctuary! 🎉
